Deep Tissue Massage

Massage is the manipulation of the superficial and deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue by using various techniques designed to enhance function, to aid in healing processes, to decrease muscle reflex activity, to inhibit motor-neuron excitability and promote relaxation and well-being.

Deep tissue massage is a form of massage therapy that focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. It is especially effective for chronic aches and pains and contracted areas such as stiff neck and upper back, low back pain, leg muscle tightness, and sore shoulders.

Some of the same strokes are used as in classical massage therapy and the therapist uses massage oil. However, the movement is slower, and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain in order to reach the sub-layer of muscles and the fascia (the connective tissue surrounding muscles). The treatment can involve direct deep pressure which can cause discomfort.

I especially love delivering deep tissue massage as you can actually feel historic injuries (often triggered by poor sitting posture) and gradually unravel the muscles and and step back through time.

Unlocking the connective tissue is key to restoring muscular range of motion and joint flexibility. Many clients attend for a monthly appointment to allow them to address the issue of chronic poor posture and far too much sitting.
