Deep Tissue Massage
Massage is the manipulation of the superficial and deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue by using various techniques designed to enhance function, to aid in healing processes, to decrease muscle reflex activity, to inhibit motor-neuron excitability and promote relaxation and well-being.
Deep tissue massage is a form of massage therapy that focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. It is especially effective for chronic aches and pains and contracted areas such as stiff neck and upper back, low back pain, leg muscle tightness, and sore shoulders.
Some of the same strokes are used as in classical massage therapy and the therapist uses massage oil. However, the movement is slower, and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain in order to reach the sub-layer of muscles and the fascia (the connective tissue surrounding muscles). The treatment can involve direct deep pressure which can cause discomfort.
